Just received an 8gb hand me down ipod touch, need help!?

It was my cousins, I guess she got a newer one so she sent this one over with my aunt for moi! Now I've restored according to what the apple support site says and i've gotten a few songs on and what not. but i'm unsure of a few things. at the top there is a little battery , with a lightning bolt in it , i umed this meant it was charging but the screen keeps going black, and i have to touch one of the ons for a few seconds and then the apple shows up for a moment or two and then pcode entry , syncing, etc (which i cancel, and don't know if i should) and then it keeps saying only 10% battery left? is it not charging? why does the screen keep going off, i'm so new to this, my cousins gonna come help me soon but i'm just curious if anyone on here could help me even sooner!
